Nick's Fish House

View from inside the restaurant
This Sunday, my family and I went out to lunch at Nick’s Fish House located on the Patapsco River in the Baltimore Peninsula. The beautiful waterfront views were something I wasn’t expecting to arrive to after our drive through the city. This restaurant is truly a hidden gem, with an outdoor deck and bar including outdoor seating which I’d imagine becomes very popular during our warm Baltimore summers. When the weather is nice, the restaurant also has live music and entertainment on the waterfront deck. Unfortunately for my family and I, we went to Nick’s Fish House on a rainy and windy February afternoon, but still enjoyed our time!

Crabs and Community

The restaurant is known for their steamed crabs, crab cakes, and fresh seafood; a popular delicacy in Baltimore. Crabs are a quintessential part of Baltimore’s culture and tradition, being a food that gathers family and friends together. Many Baltimore traditions revolve around crabs; not only eating them but catching them and preparing them as well. Crabs, seafood, and many other dishes are typically seasoned with Old Bay Seasoning; Maryland’s most popular spice blend created in Baltimore. Without a doubt, crabs are a delicious Baltimore staple, but is also valued for the sense of community and state pride it brings to the city.

Taste of Baltimore

Nick’s Fish House had such a warm, beachy vibe on the inside, I had to remind myself it wasn’t summer when my family and I were seated! We ordered the lobster egg rolls as an appetizer for the table which were delicious. It was such an interesting combination of flavors, with a sweet thai chili sauce drizzled over the flaky and savory roll. Also, my mom and I shared the cream of crab soup and fish tacos. We both really enjoyed both of our choices, but my favorite was the cream of crab soup because of the rich flavor and pieces of crab meat mixed in with the soup. I would highly recommend this restaurant to someone visiting Baltimore, interested in getting a taste of some of our “staple” dishes and getting a better understanding of why many of our traditions revolve around crabs.
