The Scoop on Taharka Brothers Ice cream

When it comes to ice cream, I’m not picky. For as long as I can remember, ice cream has been my favorite food and I’ve never had a scoop that I didn’t enjoy. I remember when I tried Taharka Brothers Ice cream for the first time when my aunt brought a pint of it to our family dinner. I was in middle school and was eager as ever after eating dinner to move-on to dessert. I couldn’t wait for a scoop of ice cream, and when I saw the flavor, I was even more excited. It was the first time I had ever seen “Honey Graham” ice cream and it certainly did not disappoint.

On a rainy and cold Friday night, my roommate and I were craving ice cream so I knew I had to take her to Jupiter’s Icecream in Mount Washington Mill so she could experience Taharka Brothers Icecream for the first time.
Taharka Brothers is an employee-owned business and a testament to Taharka McCoy, a Baltimore resident who was murdered in 2002, inspiring others to work hard and advocate for change. The Baltimore business has used its delicious icecream as a platform for young people of our community to become leaders and change makers. The founder and Baltimore native Sean Smeeton was inspired to address the inequalities in Baltimore, influencing his business to become employee owned, creating a team thats connected and shares passion for change.

When we walked into the ice cream shop lit up with neon “Jupiter’s” signs and decorated with pictures and drawings, I had my mind made up on what I was going to order; “single scoop of honey gram please!” My roommate followed my lead, ordering the same thing. As we waited while the kind workers scooped our icecream, my eyes were drawn to the colorful handwritten menu chalk board and the unique flavors listed. Some of the flavors include Key Lime Pie, Caramel Crunch, Mintflix & Chill, and Double Fudge Brownie. You can even build your own Sundae with toppings like peanut butter, marshmallow, pretzels, and M&Ms to name a few. Milkshakes and Malts were listed on the menu as well, making it hard for me to resist adding to my order. The worker handed us our icecreams in little green cups, overflowing with honey graham icecream. The creamy texture of the ice cream with sweet chunks of honey graham mixed in makes the ice cream special. My roommate quickly understood where my obsession comes from when it comes to Taharka Brothers icecream. It's also nice knowing that by supporting this business, we are also supporting youth in Baltimore to overcome challenges. We both finished our generous single scoops and hopped in the car for our 10 minute drive back to campus. We can’t wait until the next time we’re back at Jupiter’s.
